From Genomics to Clinic: The Role of the Hong Kong Genome Project in Transforming Patient Care and Population Health

The biotechnology revolution is transforming medicine by bringing genomic innovation from the research laboratory into real-life clinical practice. Genomic medicine, powered by large-scale sequencing and integrated analysis, is redefining how diseases are diagnosed, prevented, and treated worldwide. The Hong Kong Genome Project (HKGP) is a leading example of this transformation in action. Implemented by the Hong Kong Genome Institute (HKGI), HKGP could integrate whole genome sequencing (WGS) into healthcare to uncover genetic causes of undiagnosed diseases, guide early detection for at-risk individuals and families, and inform reproductive and precision treatment decisions. By linking cutting-edge biotechnology with hospitals, clinicians, and patients, HKGP demonstrates how scientific expertise and clinical application converge—turning breakthrough discoveries into actionable medical insights that improve health outcomes and advance precision medicine in Hong Kong and beyond.
