A New Challenge of Adopting a new wave of Digital Transformation Journey
Hong Kong Sanatorium Hospital has been gone through a digital journey for more than 40 years. To start with, we adopted a COBOL programming language platform (as our 1st generation) for the patient registration, hospital service billing and pharmacy dispensing functions since 1984. Thereafter, we migrated to another platform of Foxpro and VB (as our 2nd generation) for handling Patient registration, Patient checkin, In-patient admission, Ward console, Center console and doctor console functions since 1998. In 2015, we made an attempt to adopt another platform of Microsoft .Net platform with C## language (as our 3rd generation) for handling some other functions including e-Nursing documentation, e-Medical Administration Record, e-Document Digital Signature. In 2020, we put more focus onto mobile app strategy by which we had launched many mobile apps including Patient App, Doctor App, Nursing App, COVID App, Vaccine App, UK TB App, Telemedicine App, Waiting Time App and etc for our hospital colleague and patient daily use. As at today, we built up an application system of using multi-technology platform with COBOL, Foxpro, VB, .Net, C#, Vue, Flutter, Web programming language for our daily use. In 2025, we made a decision of commensing another digital transformation journey as our next 5-year business and IT strategy (as our 5th generation) of using Private Cloud platform for our Hospital Information System Modernization Roadmap including migration of obsolete PACS/RIS and EMR systems. This is our new challenge to handle partnership collaboration with Mainland Chinese vendors including private cloud service and application co-development service together with revamp of our existing HIS under a multi-technology language platform.
